There Is Only One
Track thirteen from Plant New Dreams was written after shamanic drumming experiences in August of 2002.
Lyrics
I journeyed through the darkness, to the sound of beating drums.
I met a man five times my age, and I was forty-one.
We shared a pipe and silence, before he finally spoke.
The words he said and scent of sage, surrounded my like smoke. He said that in reality, the universe is one.
That nothing separates the earth from sky and sea and sun.
That all beings are connected, I frowned and shook my head.
He closed his eyes, and breathed in smoke. These are the words he said. "There is only one moon, there is only one sun,
There is only one earth, there is only one one." "My journey here", the old man said, "was made not just for me.
But the animals and mountains, the rivers, rocks and trees."
He told me I am just a part of all that is, the whole,
That all beings are connected, to one that is, soul. "But I've been taught since I was young, I'm separate and distinct.
No one tells me how to act or what I should think!"
The old man said for me to live, first thing to do was die.
To let go of the separateness, to let go of I. "There is only one heart, there is only one soul,
There is only one body, there is only one whole." The old man said that I must go, as drumbeats slowly died.
And to remember, I'm the teacher, and he was just a guide.
And by sharing what I've learned here, it will grow more clear that way.
And so this song comes through me, and now I too can say. "There is only one heart, there is only one soul,
There is only one body, there is only one whole."
